What does the author want you to know?
“Somewhere along the way, you’re going to realize that when this is all said and done, you are stronger because of what you’re facing right now. And you are going to grow into something far more beautiful than you ever could have dreamed possible.”
- -Mallory Weggemann
Sometimes you read a book and you know it will stay with you for the rest of your life.
Mallory is a graceful narrator as she invites us into her life. She shares childhood memories and paints a warm, loving and supportive environment that doesn’t feel like forced perfection. We are there with her family when they take road trips, see her sister through detrimental health issues, and hear the uplifting words her parents told her after her paralysis. Her support system proved to be exactly what she needed to help mold her into the extraordinary person she is today.
In her memoir, she pin points the exact moment of her paralysis which lead to her painstaking yet beautiful recovery. She then takes you on her journey back to the pool, which was a place she called home before becoming paralyzed.
Mallory has a way of making her words feel like a hug from your best friend. Her story offers empowerment as she comes to learn all about healing and hope. She shares about how it is not about a destination, but all about the journey. We all need encouragement to overcome challenges and obstacles and that’s exactly what she gives her readers.
One of my favorite lines from her book is about changing her corner of the world. Even after she won medals, broke records, and had prestigious speaking engagements, what meant most to her was helping others heal and know they could live a fulfilling life.
Mallory has a large corner of the world and she fills it with her bright and joyful spirit. Her character shines through each page of her book and it will always be one that I cherish.
